From her blog, the owner of this bountiful supply (I'm jealous!) and her family live in Utah and appear to be Mormons. I believe the Mormon Church, to its great credit, strongly encourages emergency preparedness, of which having a sizable food and water stockpile is an important element. In fact, I think the Mormon Church encourages its members to strive for a year's supply of food, and the Church has a number of resources geared towards helping its members achieve that goal.

Good stuff; I especially liked the meal planning recipe checklists to help estimate food stocking quantities for various items.
